Paralympics Games Travel Update

Travel advice for the Paralympic Games from Wednesday 29 August to Sunday 9 September.

The Paralympics, which are the second largest sporting event in the world, with 2.5 million tickets expected to be sold. On the busiest days, there will be as many spectators travelling to the Olympic Park as there were during the Olympic Games. The second week is expected to be much busier, as school terms begin. There are fewer transport hotspots for the Paralympics and the impact on travel is expected to be more focused on the City and east of London.

London is very much open for business and we are confident that transport will cope well, as it did during the Olympics, provided that we again get your support in changing the way or time that you travel.
Public Transport
Public transport serving the Paralympics venues at the Olympic Park, ExCeL, North Greenwich Arena, Greenwich Park and the Royal Artillery Barracks at Woolwich will be busy from 07:30 – 09:30 and from 16:00 – 19:00, especially the Central and Jubilee lines between central London and Stratford and the DLR.

Roads
The Paralympic Route Network (PRN) will be much smaller than the Olympic Route Network (ORN) and will operate on roads largely in the east of London.

The PRN comes into operation on the first day of the Paralympics on 29 August; preparation for the introduction of the PRN starts this weekend. To watch a short video explaining how the PRN and Games Lanes work, please click here

Drivers are advised to avoid driving around the PRN routes and venues, particularly around the Olympic Park in Stratford and the A102 approach roads north and south of the Blackwall Tunnel.

During the Olympics there was congestion on the A2, A12 and A13, particularly in the morning peak. We expect the same during the Paralympics. If driving is your only option, travel at a different time if possible or allow more time for your journey.

Given the major events taking place on the following days, please avoid driving in central London on these dates:
Wednesday 29 August – Paralympic Torch Relay
Sunday 9 September – Paralympic Marathons and Thames Festival
Monday 10 September – The Athletes’ Parade
